Week at a Glance April 30-May 4, 2018

Round 1 is a KNOCKOUT!
We received our first round of STAAR scores and you guys... 5th Grade did AMAZING! The students made amazing gains this year. Check this out!

In reading, we are BETTER than I have EVER seen at first round at 81% passing, 43% meets, and 27% masters! When this group was in 3rd grade the teachers saw some struggle. We were all pretty worried, but with the team's hard work and strategic intervention the kids made it to 61% passing and then moved on to 4th where the kids made progress again to 66% passing!
In math, we are flying high  at 91% passing, 69% meets, and 41% masters.  To be here at first round is amazing! This group has again made progress each year from 81% in 3rd to 82% in 4th.
Please note that 3rd grade can be a big shock for kids, and it has been statistically noted that kids across the state take a dip in 4th grade...so to continue progress each year is AWESOME. Shows what fabulous teachers we have in 3rd and 4th too!

School accountability and student success are  definitely a school-wide effort.

I want to take a minute recognize the characteristics of our ENTIRE 5th grade team that help make their student successful each year.

This team works like a family and performs like a team. They are always about kids and always put them first when making any decision. I hear it in their meetings together and their meetings with me individually. They hold each other accountable-they do not dwell on things that could affect student success.  They meet and discuss data extremely quickly and use it to guide instruction. Their planning is open and in depth. They talk through what is working and not working daily. They are very open to each others ideas, ask questions, and are transparent with their own strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, they trust each other's abilities. When times get tough I know they refocus and get things back on track for kids. I have seen this consistency for 4 years now. Great job, team!

Week at a Glance April 23-27, 2018

Pizza and Picasso=Huge Success!
Pizza and Picasso is such a fun family night for John Haley. I am so proud of how it has evolved. PTA was able to raise close to $1,400.00 for our End of the Year party! YAY!

I wanted to send a HUGE thank you out to our organizers...

FaLessha Esslinger-Thank YOU for organizing EVERYTHING for this. At one moment, (when stress was lurking) FaLessha told me "you don't have to worry about this, we've got it!" and I instantly felt 100 times better. She called, emailed, and picked up the donations, shopped for decorations and art supplies, helped Gray, printed and framed items, made decorations, created bags, and organized the schedule and logistics for the whole event. I KNOW it was a lot of work and I appreciate it more than you know. Your dedication to the events at our school mean so much to the kids and staff. Thank you!!

Caitlin Gray- To take something on like this in your first year as a teacher is AMAZING! You took it, embraced it, and never made anyone feel like you were overly stressed! (We'll, except maybe that one staff meeting-ha!)  I am proud of the teacher you have become! We are proud to have you as part of the JH Family!

Blanca Arevalo-This lady is Wonder Woman! She has been helping me with secretarial duties since December, helping  PTA, and continuing to work in records without delay! She assisted Esslinger out with P&P duties on top of all of this...just such an amazing partner in this crazy world of running a school! Thank you Blancita!

And of course, thank you ALL for helping with the night and organizing an activity to connect with kids. They are so excited..I heard kids were sitting on pins and needles when we announced the winners. Love it!

Getting Re-Connected!
Now that the first round of STAAR and TELPAS are over we will be refocusing on INSTRUCTION throughout the building. YAY!  (Personally, I am feeling a bit disconnected!) That means its time for us to see the kids smiling faces learning from the best teachers in Texas! We plan on visiting each of you at some point this week and our focus will be the by statements. :) Remember, this is a work in progress and learning together.  Remember we are continuing to build a culture of true growth mindset. If we accomplish it to the fullest there will be no stopping us!

Have a great week! -Sanders
