Week at a Glance February 26-March 2, 2018

I Love Reading!
A true desire to read is not a built-in guarantee for kids.  It has to be inspired and then continuously nurtured until we know we have a skilled self-advocating reading on our hands. No pressure at all, right?

Here are a few researched-backed ways to cultivate this in your classroom.
  • Help students find books on their personal interests
  • Get kids into a series when they are ready. This is the BEST way to keep them going! (We have seen it here with Mrs. Galvan's Series Launch! Woo-Hoo!)
  • Keep your library organized and up to date! (let us know if you need help!)
  • Books should be a priority in Math and Science classrooms too!
  • Make sure kids now how to find Just Right books
  • Let kids share what they are reading with the class-let them get each other excited.
  • MOST IMPORTANT---- GET EXCITED! Model and introduce, introduce, introduce!
  • Read to them everyday!
Escape even more into books with our kids this week! ~Sanders

Week at a Glance February 20-23, 2018

Linguistic Accommodations are FUN!
It's already hard to keep track of all of the amazing, research-based teaching strategies in any classroom..and with a high English Learners population-we are responsible for a little bit more.  I would like to encourage some easy strategies for how you can turn up the heat on our English acquisition! In the spirit of keeping in simple-here are some SPEAKING strategies at each level of learner.

Speaking Strategies
Beginners:
~Provide short sentence stems and single words for practice before conversations
~Provide word bank of key vocabulary
~Model pronunciation of social AND academic language

Intermediate:
~Provide sentence stems with simple structures and tenses
~Model and provide practice of pronunciation of academic terms

Advanced:
~Allow extra time after pauses
~Provide sentence stems with all tenses, complex grammar, and vocabulary with content-based and abstract terms

Advanced High:
~Allow opportunities to extend discussion
~Continue to provide sentence stems with all tenses, complex grammar, and vocabulary with content-based and abstract terms

Your sentence stems can be easily provided on sentence strips or chart paper to reference when speaking. When students are answering or discussing-always refer to the appropriate structure of language. You will see huge gains in a short amount of time.

Have a great week! ~ Lindsey

Week at a Glance February 12-16, 2018

Bulldog Team-
I know, I know... the last thing you want is a long post from me trying to encourage you to do your best this week.  I mean COME ON, SANDERS! Don't you know that its FEBRUARY. The ARMPIT of the school year?

But, I need motivation too.  And most of the time, I count on that from you, your kids, and your stories from each week. I really can't count on inspiration from outside of our walls. So, I thought you might like to hear some inspiration I have heard lately around the building.

1. A teacher that has had a 3-4 year struggle to make connections with two particular 4th graders has finally found it. I knew it was there. She knew it was there. One of the happiest moments of my school year was hearing that!
2. You all sharing your kids-trusting each other-taking responsibility for OUR kids has been SO inspiring.
3. A wonderful person taking on WAY more than her job...because she truly loves our school and our kids and wants to make a difference.
4.  Many teachers saying things like "I need to look at how I AM TEACHING if kids are not getting it" and administrators saying "I need to look at how I AM COMMUNICATING it if teachers aren't seeing it" are wonderful to hear as we grow as a school. We can't control anything except for what WE DO.
5. Our CORE team coming together to make sure our new teacher feels supported by teaching the class, helping set up procedures, moving along much needed behavior plans, and encouraging parent meetings. They truly want to see ALL of you succeed.

There has been so much more-and I will continue to share throughout the month. I know how hard your job is... it's the hardest job in the building. We hope you know that if there is anything we can do to help you, do not hesitate to ask. We are here to SERVE you and our kids.

~Lindsey
