Week at a Glance January 14-18, 2019

JHE Staff,

An interesting week is upon us! Luckily, you all have some time to plan together and work in your rooms too! AND you get a three day weekend!

To keep things transparent, I wanted to let everyone know that I had visitors last week to discuss data that will be presented at the board meeting on Monday night in regards to John Haley reading (school-wide) and its not putting us in the best light. This week, JH leadership will be reviewing mid-year data to look for areas that may need help. Please take the time to do the same for yourself. You should know your MOY MAP data well as we will be discussing individually and with teams soon-as well as any and all other data used to make and adjust instructional practices.

This is by no means meant to worry anyone, we are just trying to figure out how and where to refocus time, people, and curriculum. We are all in this together! Teamwork WILL make the dream work.

Looking forward to focused week with kids! Let us know if you need ANYTHING!
~Sanders

~A BIG  SHOUT OUT to everyone that helped make our FortWrite launch a success. The kids are pumped up!
~Hugs and A HUGE THANK YOU goes to Rosa Fernandez for all of her amazing work at J. Haley. Unfortunatly, due to number comparisons across the district, she was moved to another campus as she was the last instructional paraprofessional hired. We know she will do amazing things there!  Luckily, her amazing kids will still attend John Haley!

WHILE WE WERE OUT WE MISSED AN IMPORTANT BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY IRMA DOMINGUEZ! (JAN 4)

Week at a Glance December 17-21, 2018

Happy LAST week of 2018 at JHE!
It will be a great last week of school but I cannot deny my excitement to kick back, relax, and watch some of my favorite Christmas movies (seen below)!  We appreciate this staff so much and we hope you ALL get some MUCH needed rest and recovery!
PS: If you are the first three people to email me back with the 5 names of these movies-you can come to the office and get a prize from Blanca!

  • WHO ARE THE NORTH POLE NINJAS? I DON'T KNOW EITHER, BUT I KNOW THEY ARE AWESOME! Thank you for spreading joy across the building!
  • HOW COOL (or is it warm) was Mrs. Patrick's Polar Express last week? Thanks for working hard to create memories for our kids, Carrie!
  • HIGH FIVE to our awesome counselors  for working hard to meet the emotional and socio needs of our students this season!
I would like to take a minute and say a very special thank you to...
Mrs. Melinda Rios-Galvan.
Melinda is one of the most self-less individual I have ever met. She is patient, compassionate, understanding, and she is beyond trustworthy. She continuously looks for the best in everyone and as a specialist, she sincerely wants every teacher to cultivate their craft no matter where they are on their teaching path.  She encourages learners of all ages-even being deemed the JHE Disney Princess (with an edge of course!)  because of the ability to surround others in warmth and push their confidence upward. She CONSTANTLY researches  up-to-date instructional practices and seeks out answers directly from authors and other experts. She pushes for teacher rights with the district and ensures that teachers are protected from things they shouldn't have to worry about so they can...teach! We are honored to work with you, Melinda!

Week at a Glance-December 3-7, 2018

JHE Staff,

I really, really, really like this quote.

I have done a lot of reflecting this weekend on a couple of things.

First... I read an article about millennials in the workplace and how businesses are being innovative about their work environments. And I reflected on how this is ANOTHER example  that shows how teachers are INCREDIBLY self-sacrificing. The working conditions of a teacher do not allow for their OWN personal connections (calling family/doctor when needed, etc) outside of a specific time of day. How you can't take a break when you get overwhelmed...but please know that we do care and we do think about it.  Currently brainstorming (and welcoming) innovate ideas to alleviate this-no matter how small.
AND
Secondly, I reflected on how I steer our staff back to the vision when times get rocky. Stuff gets rough and the vision shrinks. We overreact. We beat ourselves up. We become less open to understanding and change. We must turn the ship back towards the destination to land on success.

What's my point? In the past five years I believe we came together, became a better family, and worked along-side each other to make progress. Now its time for us to trust one another to FIND SUCCESS. It's time for reflection-are we supporting the vision or unknowingly resisting the vision?

Help Me Help You. Your voice is respected. It has a place here. I need your knowledge for instructional decisions and I need ownership from the people doing the biggest work.  I KNOW your job is hard-I know you don't have much time with your loved ones during the week, I know how much you work OUTSIDE of the actual classroom. I am NEVER questioning that.  So please-trust me when I try to steer us. I see the big picture. Its my job.  If we want true success we must work together, side-by-side, trusting and helping each other, and supporting the vision-one decision at a time.

~A GINORMOUS SHOUT OUT to the SECOND GRADE TEAM and other friends  for beginning RTI last week. It was so great to see everyone coming together to help kids-and MAN where the kids excited! WAY TO GO!

Shout out to Caitlin Gray for going above and beyond to hold an ART CLUB every Thursday for our kids!  She has also been working very hard on the Art Showcase that is this Friday from 5:30-7:30.

Week at a Glance November 26-30, 2018

Welcome Back, Leaders!

Not going to lie.
I really did not want to go to a leadership training the district sent me to last week.

(Blech. No!!!! Too much to do!!!)
However, I went..."volun-told" but... I went.   And of course...I loved it!

The theme of the day was growth and change... which is a topic that is hard for us but I have grown to LOVE!  Here are a few of my favorite and most reflective tidbits that you might enjoy-because EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU is a leader!
  • Leaders should constantly change!
    •  How can leaders expect growth from others when they are not growing?
    • These areas are good questions to ask yourself:
      • Am I a good listener? Am I open to change? Do I ask more questions than answer them? Do I understand the difference between being adaptable and conforming?
  • Everyone must UNLEARN to RELEARN. So...you do something (enter/test)...you fail... you learn why you failed...you improve...and you "re-enter" (try again)!
  • You MUST know and understand the difference between criticism and feedback. (Feedback comes from those who TRULY want you to get better!)
  • Leadership takes CHARACTER-see my new favorite quote below!

        Special Shout-Out: Suzanne Kline

Suzanne works tirelessly for our staff and our kids. (Her work ethic will make anyone question their own.) She stays at school when ANYONE needs her, she works many days well into the midnight hour, she researches constantly, she answers any desperate calls I have at any time...she is waking in the middle of the night thinking about our teachers and kids.

She is PASSIONATE. She is WILLING to LEARN new things. She is REFLECTIVE. She is HONEST. (She even tells me things that I might not want to hear!) I have seen her TWICE this week fight for our kids and teachers when something didn't feel right.

She knows that being a good teacher and coach means you are constantly trying to learn and that you have enough humility to know "its not all about me". She gives credit to others all the time, she is willing to work with anyone at any time, and she gets excited when she sees others (adults or kids) LEARN!

Thank you Mrs. Kline, for all that you do for JHE.
